LA Galaxy acquire Hirving Lozano leaving some fans questioning magnitude of rivalries.

The LA Galaxy confirmed Friday that they have acquired Mexican winger Hirving Lozano on loan from Southern California rival San Diego FC in what the club considers a blockbuster move.

Lozano will remain with the Galaxy through the end of the 2026 season, with the club holding an option to acquire him permanently. He will occupy a designated player spot on the Galaxy roster.

Fans of the club have shown mixed reactions to this signing leaving most wondering what rivalries stand for anymore considering the player comes from a fellow California rival. MLS creator Eli Lesser, for example, mentioned that this signing was making the “Loyalty Card a little redundant”, explaining that this move by The Galaxy helps out their rivals by freeing up a DP spot so that they can sign an even bigger player making them one step closer to making the playoffs.

For fans concerned about the future of Lozano in San Diego, head coach Mikey Varas made it clear that the Mexican international was no longer part of the club’s plans for the upcoming season. The move to Los Angeles gives Lozano an opportunity to restart his MLS career.

“Hirving is a player whom we tried to acquire three years ago, so this feels like something of a full-circle moment. He is a fierce competitor with an excellent track record of performing on teams that have competed for titles in multiple leagues, including his debut season in MLS,” LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said.

“As we evaluated opportunities to strengthen our roster for the stretch run of the season, it became clear that Hirving was the right player for the moment we are in as a club. We have a talented group, a strong locker room, and a clear objective over these final 15 games of the season, and we are thrilled that Hirving and his family are joining the Galaxy.”

Before arriving in Southern California, Lozano played for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, Italian club Napoli and Liga MX side Pachuca. Across his club career, he has recorded 135 goals and 85 assists in 462 appearances.

Internationally, Lozano has scored 18 goals in 75 appearances for Mexico. He represented El Tri at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
