Orange County SC appeared headed toward three important points Saturday night, but a late equalizer from Sacramento Republic FC forced the Western Conference rivals to settle for a 1-1 draw at Championship Soccer Stadium. Following a scoreless opening half, Orange County broke through in the 61st minute. Ryan Doghman helped create the opportunity for Chris Hegardt, who finished the move to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.
Sacramento responded by turning to its bench. Aaron Essel entered the match in the 81st minute and needed only two minutes to make an impact. The 21-year-old midfielder connected with a delivery from Memo Rodriguez in the 83rd minute, beating Orange County goalkeeper Alexander Rando to level the match. Neither side found a decisive goal during the closing minutes or six minutes of second-half stoppage time. The teams split the points after combining for four second-half yellow cards in an increasingly physical finish. The result extended Orange County’s winless run to five matches. OCS has collected two points during that stretch after suffering three consecutive home defeats before earning back-to-back 1-1 draws against Oakland Roots SC and Sacramento.
Orange County remains near the top of a tightly contested Western Conference with a 9-5-9 record and 36 points. Sacramento moved to 8-5-9 with 33 points, keeping both clubs firmly involved in the postseason race. Saturday’s draw also prevented Sacramento from completing a regular-season sweep of Orange County. Republic FC won the first meeting 3-2 on May 2 after scoring twice in the final minutes, including Michel Benitez’s stoppage-time winner.
Orange County will remain at Championship Soccer Stadium for its next match as the club continues searching for its first victory since defeating El Paso Locomotive FC.
