LA28 Olympics: 5 New Sports Coming to Los Angeles in 2028

LOS ANGELES — The 2028 Olympic Games are already shaping up to look very different from previous editions, and Los Angeles is bringing some major changes to the Olympic program.

Flag football makes its Olympic debut

One of the biggest changes will be the arrival of flag football, which will make its first appearance as an Olympic sport at LA28.

Unlike traditional American football, flag football is a limited-contact version of the game, with players stopping the action by removing a flag rather than making a tackle.

Its Olympic debut could give the sport a huge international audience and introduce a new generation of fans to the game.

Cricket returns to the Olympics

Cricket is also coming back.

The sport will return in T20 format, marking one of the most anticipated additions to the LA28 program. Cricket has a massive global following, particularly in countries such as India, Pakistan, Australia, England and South Africa.

Its return could make LA28 an even more international sporting event.

Baseball and softball are back

Baseball and softball will also return to the Olympic stage.

For Los Angeles, baseball’s return carries obvious significance. The city has a deep baseball culture, and the sport is one of the biggest parts of the Southern California sports landscape.

Lacrosse returns in a new format

Lacrosse is another sport returning to the Olympics, but LA28 will feature Sixes, a faster format designed for shorter, more dynamic games.

The format should bring a different pace to Olympic lacrosse and could help introduce the sport to viewers who may not be familiar with the traditional version.

Squash makes its Olympic debut

Squash will also make history in Los Angeles by becoming an Olympic sport for the first time.

The fast-paced indoor sport will join the LA28 program alongside the other four additional sports, giving athletes a new opportunity to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

LA28 is more than just new sports

The changes go beyond the five additional sports.

Los Angeles will also feature new events and adjustments across the Olympic program, continuing the broader evolution of the Games. The official LA28 plan includes 36 Olympic sports and more than 800 competition events, spread across venues throughout Los Angeles, Southern California and other locations.

The Olympic Games will take place from July 14 through July 30, 2028, turning Los Angeles into the center of the sporting world for more than two weeks.

For LA, this isn’t simply another Olympics.

It’s a chance to put the city’s sports culture, venues and diverse communities on a global stage — while giving fans the opportunity to watch some sports make history in Los Angeles for the first time.

And with less than two years to go, the countdown to LA28 is getting real.
