The road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin far from Southern California.
Organizers announced that the 2028 Olympic Torch Relay will start in Atlanta, the host city of the 1996 Summer Olympics, before taking the Olympic flame on a journey through all 50 U.S. states and eventually bringing it to Los Angeles for the opening of LA28.
The Olympic flame will first be lit in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. From there, it will make its way to the United States and begin the nationwide relay in spring 2028.
For Atlanta, the announcement carries a special connection to Olympic history. The city hosted the last Summer Olympics held in the United States in 1996, and 32 years later, the Olympic flame will return before continuing its journey west toward Los Angeles.
From Atlanta to Los Angeles
This will not be a short trip.
The LA28 organizers say the torch relay is expected to visit communities across the country, passing landmarks and connecting with cultural and sporting events along the way. Select cities will also host celebrations as the flame makes its way toward California.
The exact route has not been announced yet. Organizers are expected to reveal the complete 2028 Olympic Torch Relay route in 2027, meaning cities across the country will have to wait a little longer to find out whether the Olympic flame will pass through their communities.
For Los Angeles, the arrival of the flame will mark another major step toward the return of the Summer Olympics to the city.
We're relay, relay excited for this one!

A nationwide Olympic moment
LA28 chair and president Casey Wasserman described the relay as an opportunity to bring the Olympic experience to communities throughout the country.
The plan is to have people in all 50 states take part in the journey as the flame makes its way toward the Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles.
The Paralympic Torch Relay will follow the Olympic Games in August 2028. Its flame will originate in Stoke Mandeville, England, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, although the U.S. starting location has not yet been announced.
With LA28 approaching, the torch relay gives fans across the country another reason to start looking ahead to 2028. Before the athletes arrive in Los Angeles, the Olympic flame will make its own journey — one that will take it across an entire nation.
Los Angeles is the destination. But this time, the Olympic journey will belong to all 50 states.
