Vidović’s Penalty Lifts SC Paderborn 07 Past D.C. United in International Friendly at Audi Field

WASHINGTON, D.C. — September 30, 2026

D.C. United welcomed German Bundesliga side SC Paderborn 07 to Audi Field on Wednesday night for an international club friendly under near-perfect conditions in the nation’s capital. With clear skies overhead, the two clubs battled through a tightly contested match before Paderborn escaped Washington with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Gabriel Vidović.

The opening 20 minutes were relatively quiet as both teams settled into the match and tested each other’s defensive structure. D.C. United created a few opportunities going forward but struggled to find a way through Paderborn’s organized back line.

Paderborn gradually began applying more pressure as the first half progressed. Gabriel Vidović #40 found a small opening in the 29th minute, providing an early glimpse of the attacking threat he would eventually bring after halftime.

Despite Paderborn appearing more comfortable moving the ball through different areas of D.C.’s defense, neither side could find the breakthrough before the halftime whistle.

That changed almost immediately after the restart.

In the 47th minute, Paderborn were awarded a penalty, giving Vidović an opportunity from the spot. The 22-year-old converted the penalty to put the visitors ahead 1-0 and deliver what ultimately became the decisive goal of the night.

D.C. United nearly produced an immediate response.

Just six minutes later, D.C. United’s #40 Castillo unleashed an attempt that crashed off the crossbar in the 53rd minute, denying the Black-and-Red what would have been a dramatic equalizer.

From there, Paderborn’s defensive organization became one of the defining elements of the second half. The German side largely kept D.C. away from dangerous areas inside the box while continuing to move the ball in and out of United’s defensive structure.

The final possession numbers were evenly split at 50% apiece, but the attacking statistics painted a different picture of Paderborn’s territorial pressure. D.C. United finished with eight total shots, four on target, while Paderborn recorded nine shots with two on target.

Perhaps the biggest difference came from the corners.

Paderborn generated an overwhelming 10 corner kicks compared with just one for D.C. United, highlighting how frequently the visitors pushed play toward United’s defensive third and forced the Black-and-Red to defend.

The match was physical as well. D.C. United committed eight fouls, while Paderborn were called for 17, as the intensity increased during the second half and United searched for an equalizer.

D.C. continued pushing as the match entered its closing stages, but Paderborn refused to surrender the advantage. Their defensive shape remained disciplined, limiting United’s ability to turn possession into a decisive opportunity in front of goal.

When the final whistle sounded at Audi Field, SC Paderborn 07 had secured the 1-0 international friendly victory, with Vidović’s 47th-minute penalty standing as the difference.

It was a competitive meeting between American and German club football on a picture-perfect night in Washington, with D.C. United testing themselves against Bundesliga opposition and Paderborn demonstrating the patient possession, attacking pressure and defensive discipline needed to leave the nation’s capital with the win.
