With the Western Conference playoff race heating up, LA Galaxy secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Portland Timbers in a matchup between two teams fighting for a playoff spot.
Portland controlled much of the opening minutes and even found the back of the net early, but the goal was disallowed. Galaxy gradually settled into the game, found more possession, and broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Marco Reus scored following a sequence involving Robert Taylor and Pablo Ruiz. Just two minutes later, Reus appeared to score again, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Portland looked to respond after halftime, testing Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy with several important attempts early in the second half. McCarthy made key saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard as Galaxy worked through the initial pressure. As the half progressed, the home side took greater control of the match, managing possession and limiting Portland’s opportunities to build sustained attacks.
The decisive moment came in the 80th minute, when Justin Haak rose to meet a cross from Reus and headed home to make it 2-0. The goal gave Galaxy the cushion they needed to close out the match and secure three valuable points against a direct competitor in the Western Conference standings. After weathering Portland’s early pressure, Galaxy finished in control, earning an important victory in their push for a playoff spot.
