BARTLETT SPARKS THE FIGHT, SAINT-MAXIMIN ENDS IT! Charlotte Takes Down D.C. United 2-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. — September 19, 2026

D.C. United fell 2–1 to Charlotte FC on Saturday night at Audi Field, as Allan Saint-Maximin’s second-half winner ended a determined comeback effort from the Black-and-Red.

On a brisk night in the nation’s capital, the atmosphere around Audi Field was electric. Supporters filled the stadium with chants that could be heard blocks away, setting the stage for a competitive matchup between two sides that traded momentum throughout the night.

Charlotte struck first in the 22nd minute when Ashley Westwood found the breakthrough, giving the visitors a 1–0 advantage. Charlotte controlled more of the opening half, but the attacking numbers remained competitive as D.C. continued searching for opportunities to break through.

D.C. United came out of halftime with renewed urgency, and it took only two minutes for the response to arrive.

In the 47th minute, defender Lucas Bartlett capitalized on a corner kick to bring D.C. level at 1–1. The goal shifted the momentum inside Audi Field and gave the Black-and-Red new life as they pushed forward looking to complete the comeback.

D.C. appeared to be the stronger attacking side for stretches of the second half, but Charlotte weathered the pressure before delivering the decisive blow.

In the 71st minute, Allan Saint-Maximin put Charlotte back in front, scoring what ultimately became the game-winning goal and silencing a D.C. crowd that had been pushing its team throughout the comeback attempt.

Possession slightly favored Charlotte at 56%, compared with D.C. United’s 44%. D.C. registered 10 shots on goal, forcing Charlotte’s goalkeeper into nine saves, while Charlotte recorded seven shots on target and D.C. finished with five saves.

The physical battle remained relatively controlled. D.C. United committed seven fouls compared with Charlotte’s 12, while both teams received two yellow cards.

For D.C., the difference ultimately came down to execution. The Black-and-Red generated opportunities, particularly during their stronger second-half performance, but could not convert enough of them. Charlotte, meanwhile, capitalized when its decisive opportunity arrived, with Saint-Maximin’s 71st-minute finish proving to be the difference.

D.C. showed fight after going behind and successfully erased Charlotte’s initial advantage, but the missed opportunities left little margin for error. By the final whistle, Charlotte had done enough to leave Audi Field with all three points and a 2–1 victory.

D.C. United will now turn its attention to the road, traveling to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, September 26.
