Club América and Cruz Azul played to a 0-0 draw Thursday night in an international friendly game at Snapdragon Stadium, bringing one of Liga MX’s fiercest rivalries to San Diego. The match took place during the FIFA international break, with both clubs looking to maintain their rhythm while several regulars were away on national team duty.
The teams opened with energy, and Cruz Azul threatened first through Nicolás Ibáñez, whose early attempt sailed over the goal. Luis Ángel Malagón was soon called into action, diving to his right to push away a long-range strike from Agustín Palavecino. América answered through Alejandro Zendejas, whose driven effort struck the base of the post and nearly gave the Águilas the lead. Cruz Azul finished the half with another opportunity, but Ibáñez’s attempt went wide.
Cruz Azul had more of the ball after the break and tried to build through the midfield, while América looked for openings with quick combinations. Both sides reached dangerous areas, but the final pass or finish kept the score level. The best chance of the second half came in the 74th minute, when Raphael Veiga sent a left-footed shot toward the top corner. Andrés Gudiño made a diving save to deny the América midfielder and preserve Cruz Azul’s clean sheet.
As substitutions mounted, the pace eased and clear chances became harder to find. Late efforts did not produce a breakthrough, and the final whistle confirmed the scoreless draw. The result followed Cruz Azul’s 4-3 victory over América in their recent Apertura meeting.
Both clubs have another friendly scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. PT. América faces Chivas in el Clásico de México at Oakland Coliseum, while Cruz Azul meets the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
