Tamarit Takes Charge as LAFC Turns to Interim Coach for Season’s Final Stretch

LAFC has named assistant coach Xavi Tamarit interim head coach for the remainder of the season, turning to a familiar member of the staff with six regular-season matches left.

Tamarit joined LAFC in January and brings more than two decades of coaching experience, including work in England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and Argentina’s top division. He holds UEFA Pro and CONMEBOL Pro coaching licenses.

His career has included work with Valencia’s academy and women’s first team, as well as assistant coaching roles at clubs including Valencia, Deportivo Alavés, Southampton, Independiente, Vélez Sarsfield, Universidad de Chile and Cádiz. Most recently, he was part of the Lanús staff that won the 2025 Copa Sudamericana. His experience spans several leagues and soccer cultures, while his months inside LAFC have given him direct familiarity with the players he will now lead.

LAFC President of Soccer Operations John Thorrington pointed to that familiarity and Tamarit’s experience in explaining the decision. The club said it has confidence in Tamarit and the staff as they work to “finish the 2026 season strong.”

The appointment follows LAFC’s decision to part ways with Marc Dos Santos on September 27. Dos Santos was in his first season as head coach after serving as an assistant for four seasons. The club said it would begin searching for a permanent head coach while Tamarit leads the team through the remainder of the campaign.

LAFC’s season began with a strong run: the team opened 5-0-1 in MLS play and went unbeaten in its first 11 matches across all competitions. Results later dipped following its CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal elimination by Toluca. LAFC entered the coaching change in sixth place in the Western Conference, with 41 points and an 11-9-8 record, and had won twice in its previous 13 matches across all competitions.

The team’s first match under Tamarit is scheduled for October 10 against Vancouver, the conference leader. With six regular-season games remaining, the immediate task is to stabilize the team’s form and keep LAFC in position to reach the playoffs, while the club weighs its long-term direction.
