Club América and Columbus Crew met once again in a high-stakes knockout matchup, this time with a place in the Leagues Cup semifinals on the line. The recent history between the two sides was evenly split, with Columbus winning their 2023 Leagues Cup meeting before América claimed the 2024 Campeones Cup in a penalty shootout.This time, the stakes were even higher, with a semifinal berth on the line — and América made sure the result would be different.
Las Águilas came out with purpose from the opening whistle and found the breakthrough in the 11th minute, when Raphael Veiga put América ahead. Columbus had a golden opportunity to respond before halftime, but Rodolfo Cota came up with a massive save in the 39th minute, denying a penalty and keeping América in front. The Crew’s missed opportunity proved costly. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Brian Rodríguez struck in the 45+6th minute to double América’s lead and send the Mexican side into halftime with a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Columbus tried to find a way back into the match after the break, but América remained composed and controlled the game. The Crew struggled to generate clear danger around Cota’s goal, while América managed its advantage with discipline and experience. Despite Columbus having more possession, the MLS side could not find the breakthrough it needed, allowing América to gradually take control of the closing stages and protect its two-goal lead.
When the final whistle sounded, América had secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Columbus Crew and a place in the Leagues Cup semifinals. Veiga and Rodríguez provided the goals, while Cota’s penalty save proved to be one of the defining moments of the night. América’s ability to capitalize on its opportunities ultimately made the difference.
Now, the road to the title continues with another all-Mexican clash. Club América will face CF Monterrey in the Leagues Cup semifinals, with a place in the championship match at stake.
