Sparks Make History in 105-84 Win Over Fire as Lisa Leslie’s Statue Is Unveiled and Nneka Reaches 8,000 Points

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Sparks put together one of their strongest offensive performances of the season Sunday night, defeating the Portland Fire 105-84 at Crypto.com Arena. The night was filled with milestones for the Sparks, highlighted by the unveiling of Lisa Leslie’s statue outside the arena and Nneka Ogwumike becoming just the fourth player in WNBA history to reach 8,000 career points.

Before the game, Los Angeles celebrated one of the most influential players in franchise and WNBA history as Lisa Leslie’s statue was unveiled outside Crypto.com Arena. Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP and two-time WNBA champion with the Sparks, became the first Sparks player honored with a statue outside the arena. The statue depicts Leslie dunking, commemorating the moment she became the first player in WNBA history to dunk in a game in 2002.

Ogwumike finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, recording her 18th double-double of the season. She reached the 8,000-point milestone in the second quarter on a putback following an offensive rebound, joining Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles and DeWanna Bonner in the exclusive 8,000-point club.

Ogwumike’s historic night came with an all-around performance that helped the Sparks control the game. Along with her 20 points and 12 rebounds, she added five assists while helping Los Angeles build and maintain its lead throughout the night.

Rae Burrell matched Ogwumike with 20 points, including 13 in the first half. Ariel Atkins added 14 points, while Chance Gray contributed 11 points off the bench. Emma Cannon also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Los Angeles took control in the second quarter, outscoring Portland 32-15 to take a 60-41 lead into halftime. The Sparks continued to build on their advantage after the break, extending their lead to as many as 24 points in the third quarter.

The Sparks’ offense was clicking from beyond the arc, knocking down 14 of 29 three-point attempts for 48.3%. Eight different Sparks made at least one three-pointer, while the team shot 53% overall from the field and 86% from the free-throw line.

The Sparks never trailed after taking a 21-19 lead late in the first quarter. Their 12-0 run in the second helped turn a close game into a comfortable advantage, and Los Angeles maintained control the rest of the way.

Portland was led by Carla Leite, who finished with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Charisma Osborne added a career-high 13 points, while Megan DiLeo scored 11 and Emily Engstler finished with 10.

With the 105-84 victory, the Sparks improved to 16-26 on the season and completed a memorable night in Los Angeles — one that celebrated the franchise’s past while adding another milestone to Ogwumike’s remarkable career.
