Sharks Shut Out by Sabres Despite Askarov’s 38 Saves

The San Jose Sharks returned to SAP Center on Tuesday night (October 27) but failed to find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Despite a strong performance from goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, San Jose suffered its second consecutive defeat and fell to 6-6-1 on the season.

Askarov finished with 38 saves, keeping the Sharks within striking distance throughout the game. Buffalo goaltender Colten Ellis stopped all 23 shots he faced, recording his first shutout of the season and the second of his NHL career.

After a scoreless opening period, Buffalo defenseman Olen Zellweger broke the deadlock just 50 seconds into the second. Carrying the puck down the left wing, Zellweger fired a wrist shot past Askarov’s blocker to give the Sabres a 1-0 advantage.

Buffalo dominated the middle period, outshooting San Jose 14-4. Askarov continued to deliver important saves, preventing the visitors from extending their lead.

The Sharks struggled to generate sustained offensive pressure, although Macklin Celebrini created one of their best opportunities with a pass to Collin Graf in front of the net. Ellis denied Graf at close range, preserving Buffalo’s narrow advantage.

San Jose also failed to capitalize on its three power-play opportunities, while Buffalo went scoreless on three chances of its own.

Offensive Struggles Prove Costly

Despite winning 55.2% of faceoffs and recording 35 hits, San Jose could not translate those advantages into goals. The Sharks managed only 11 shots across the final two periods, highlighting the offensive difficulties that overshadowed Askarov’s performance.

Defenseman Michael Kesselring, facing his former team for the first time, registered three shots in 16:25 of ice time. Buffalo’s Owen Power contributed two assists, while Zellweger’s second-period goal remained the difference until the closing minute.

With San Jose pushing for an equalizer and its net empty, Zach Benson secured the victory for Buffalo at 19:05 of the third period.

The win ended the Sabres’ three-game winless streak and improved their record to 5-4-3. For the Sharks, the defeat raised concerns about their ability to create scoring opportunities despite solid goaltending.

San Jose will look to respond when it hosts the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, October 29, as the team continues its early-season push for consistency.
