SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks officially placed the future of the franchise in familiar hands Friday, naming 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini the team’s new captain.
Celebrini becomes the 11th full-time captain in Sharks history, the youngest player ever to hold the position for San Jose and the youngest active captain in the NHL.
A New Era in San Jose
The announcement came with a connection to the organization’s past. Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sharks captain Joe Thornton presented Celebrini with his new jersey, featuring the “C” over his heart, in front of his teammates.
The decision follows a remarkable second NHL season for Celebrini. The former No. 1 overall pick finished the 2025-26 campaign with 115 points — 45 goals and 70 assists — in 82 games, placing fourth in NHL scoring. He had already served as an alternate captain for San Jose last season.
The Future Now Leads San Jose
Celebrini now succeeds Logan Couture as the Sharks enter a new chapter built around one of hockey’s brightest young stars.
At just 20 years old, the letter on Celebrini’s jersey changes, but so does the responsibility. San Jose’s young centerpiece is no longer simply part of the franchise’s future — he has officially been chosen to lead it.
