Stafford Makes History: 155th Rams Touchdown Pass Tops Gabriel’s Record in 35-21 Win Over Raiders

LAS VEGAS — Matthew Stafford now stands alone in the Los Angeles Rams record book. The quarterback’s 11-yard touchdown strike to Puka Nacua in the second quarter on Sunday gave him 155 touchdown passes as a Ram, moving him past franchise legend Roman Gabriel’s 154 and making him the first quarterback in NFL history to hold the career passing-touchdown record for two franchises. The Rams beat the Las Vegas Raiders 35-21 at Allegiant Stadium.

Stafford entered the game needing three touchdown passes to catch Gabriel, whose mark had stood since 1972, and collected all three before halftime. He opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Davis Allen in the first quarter, found Allen again from 5 yards out, then hit Nacua for the record-breaker. Stafford finished 23-of-29 for 195 yards, three touchdowns and one interception; he was 17-of-19 for 148 yards in a first half the Rams closed with a 28-6 lead.

The ground game did the heavy lifting from there. Kyren Williams ran for 99 yards and a 17-yard touchdown on 16 carries, and Blake Corum added 93 yards on 17 attempts, including the 4-yard score that sealed the win. The Rams (3-4) snapped a two-game losing streak, while the Raiders (3-4) dropped their fourth straight despite Kirk Cousins’ 26-of-44 for 295 yards and two touchdowns.

Stafford reached the Rams mark in just 81 games with Los Angeles; Gabriel needed 130. The reigning MVP, who threw a league-leading and career-best 46 touchdown passes last season, also owns Detroit’s record with 282 touchdown passes in 12 seasons with the Lions. He now has 437 career touchdown passes, sixth in NFL history, trailing only Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers (540) among active players. Asked what the record meant, Stafford joked: “It just means you’re old and you’ve played a lot of ball.” He added: “I’m just super appreciative of all the guys that have helped me do that. Catching touchdowns and throwing touchdowns isn’t a one-man job.”
