CARSON, CALIF. — The LA Galaxy returned home to Dignity Health Sports Park to host Sporting Kansas City in a Western Conference clash, as both sides looked to secure valuable early-season points in Major League Soccer.
Los Angeles entered the match hoping to capitalize on home-field advantage and build momentum in front of their supporters in Carson. The Galaxy controlled much of the early rhythm of the match, maintaining strong spells of possession and attempting to dictate the tempo through their midfield.
Sporting Kansas City, however, arrived prepared for the challenge of playing on the road. The visitors remained organized defensively and looked to capitalize on their chances when opportunities presented themselves.
The Galaxy held 60% possession, dictating much of the tempo and spending extended periods building through the midfield, but were unable to convert that control into a breakthrough.
Instead, it was a familiar face who made the difference. Former Galaxy forward Dejan Joveljić found the back of the net for Sporting Kansas City at the 47th minute, capitalizing on his opportunity to give the visitors the lead against his former club.
By the end of the first half, the LA Galaxy had recorded seven shots, with two on target, while Sporting Kansas City produced five shots, also placing two on target. One of Sporting Kansas City’s efforts on goal proved decisive, as Sporting Kansas City forward Dejan Joveljić converted to give his side the advantage heading into halftime.
The second half began with the LA Galaxy pushing for the equalizer with 2 shots in the 18 yard box but not being successful. Momentum was on the LA Galaxy’s side.
However, in the 73rd minute, the LA Galaxy’s deficit extended with a lovely goal from Sporting Kansas City midfielder, Number 4, Lasse Berg Johnsen making it LA Galaxy 0-2 Sporting Kansas City.
In the 82nd minute, the Los Angeles Galaxy resuscitated their hopes to gain something out of this game, with back to back shots hitting the 2nd post and woodwork, and finally being pushed in by a header from German legend Marco Reus making it LA Galaxy 1-2 Sporting Kansas City.
The game shifted as the LA Galaxy finally found their form and momentum was coming their way. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Los Angeles Galaxy fell at home to Sporting Kansas City by a score of 2 goals to 1.
The LA Galaxy’s next match is on March 19th, on the road to Jamaican side Mount Pleasant in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup. The LA Galaxy have a 3-0 lead from the first leg.
