CARSON, Calif.- Hirving “Chucky” Lozano feels at home at his new club as the crowd went wild for his first start for the Galaxy, after ten months of not playing at San Diego, in their 1-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes.
This was the best outcome for the Mexican International’s home debut after losing on the road against Houston which was also his MLS debut. That outcome has been overshadowed by the amazing performance the Galaxy have portrayed with Marcinkowski, as always, making himself one of the stars against his former club, Paintsil locking the game winner as he still wants to make it known he is the original DP, and Kyogo swiftly running through defenders as if it was training.
“That motivation that they(the fans) give me, is something super beautiful and it gives me a boost to give my best to the team,” Lozano said as he was explaining that this homecoming ovation he received from Galaxy and Mexico fans alike gives him the “boost” that he needed. Head Coach Greg Vanney said he has been wanting to express himself in the way he can only do on the field indicating that he was the missing piece to this puzzle which is the road to playoffs.
San Jose had some dangerous key moments too including their domination of the game within the first ten minutes of the second half but despite the great efforts they could not convert all the attacking plays that seemed promising especially due to the fact that they controlled most of the overall game and read through many of Galaxy’s plays which also led to many dispossessions.
Coach Vanney believes the code to the perfect team is in the works of being cracked with some rotations being made and substitutions tactically being timed. “It’s a formula that definitely could work as we build and grow together. I’m excited about the group that is coming together and the opportunity this group has to make a statement here in the second half of the season,” said Vanney as he highlights the potential this band of newcomers has.
Despite suffering the loss of midfielder Lucas Sanabria due to a second yellow card after the Uruguayan laid his cleats on San Jose’s Jamar Ricketts’ foot, Galaxy were able to keep their momentum going. Even after all the back and forth between the California teams, Joseph Paintsil is this Cali Clasico’s champion with his goal in the 79th minute after Marco Reus started the play with a direct pass to Harbor Miller who drove the play to the right side of the field and swiftly passed it to the Ghana international who was at point blank range and brought home the victory.
This 1-0 win had many sneak peeks for what is to come in future games, for example, Kyogo was showing heart when he was acting as a false nine throughout the game and contributing many defensive plays(3) which disallowed many of San Jose’s chances while Harbor Miller was showing his fitness and running all over the place to lock down crucial areas. He gave it all and Vanney was watching as he mentioned he had to be reassured mid game if he as alright as Miller was visibly exhausted.
Chucky Lozano and the Galaxy are set to face Montreal in Canada this coming Saturday.
