LAFC Defeats Chivas De Guadalajara in Battle at BMO Stadium

Chivas began the game in full force, coming out of the gate aggressively and testing LAFC goalkeeper Thomas Hasal twice within the first ten minutes alone through Roberto Alvarado and Omar Govea, who between them set the pace early on for what was to become a relentless and physical night of soccer. The visitors also picked up their first card of the night in the 13th minute, when Fernando “Rubén” González was booked for a rough foul, an early sign of the physical approach that Guadalajara would continue to bring for the remainder of the half.

LAFC was not going to stay quiet for long, however, and they gradually began pushing their lines higher up the pitch, eventually pinning Chivas back into its own defensive half for long stretches at a time. In the 38th minute, that sustained pressure finally paid off through a clean first-touch finish tucked into the lower right corner by Denis Bouanga, set up by a great assist from David Martínez, the result of LAFC breaking right through the middle of the field on the counterattack and catching Chivas in a genuinely vulnerable defensive position. Guadalajara didn’t take long to respond, though, and just four minutes later, in the 42nd minute, Roberto Alvarado leveled things back up with a well-placed left-footed strike that found the bottom right corner, assisted by Bryan González, sending the two sides into halftime tied at 1-1.

The second half saw Chivas come out strong, with Efraín Álvarez firing off multiple attempts from distance and Daniel Aguirre forcing a big save out of Hasal with a header in the 61st minute. Chivas put together their best stretch of the entire night between the 68th and 70th minute, stringing together three separate attempts that had the LAFC defense scrambling, capped off by Rubén González rattling the crossbar with a right-footed effort that came agonizingly close to going in. LAFC answered back with a bold double substitution in the 74th minute, bringing on Jacob Shaffelburg and Jude Terry, and the intensity never let up from there, with Daniel Aguirre and Ryan Porteous both picking up yellow cards in the 80th and 82nd minutes as both sides pushed hard for a winner that never came. Chivas made a flurry of late changes in the 83rd minute, and the final ten minutes produced their most dangerous spell of the match, with Roberto Alvarado and Luis Romo both forcing more big saves out of Hasal in the 87th and 88th minutes, while Tyler Boyd tested Raúl Rangel at the other end. When the whistle finally blew to end regulation, the match remained locked at 1-1, sending this Leagues Cup opener to penalties.
