CARSON, Calif. (October 4, 2026) — Cruz Azul defeated the LA Galaxy 2-1 Sunday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in an international friendly played during the FIFA international break. With both MLS and Liga MX regular-season action paused, the match provided an opportunity for both teams to maintain match fitness while evaluating players. The Galaxy featured a lineup with several regulars left out, giving more playing time to squad players and younger members of the team.
Cruz Azul took advantage of its opportunities in the first half, scoring twice to take control of the match. Luka Romero opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Cruz Azul won possession in the Galaxy’s half and quickly moved the ball into the box. Agustín Palavecino doubled the advantage in the 28th minute with a long-range effort from outside the box that found the bottom-right corner. Both teams made numerous substitutions throughout the match, using the friendly to test different combinations and give opportunities to younger players.
The Galaxy responded late when Joseph Paintsil returned from injury and pulled one back in the 84th minute. Troy Elgersma found Paintsil with a cross-field pass during a counterattack, allowing the forward to drive into the box and finish low past the goalkeeper. LA continued to push for an equalizer, but Cruz Azul held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Galaxy will return to MLS regular-season action next Sunday, October 11, against St. Louis CITY SC.
