Cavan Sullivan Makes History as USMNT Rout Mexico

The United States men’s national team delivered a statement performance Saturday night, defeating Mexico 3-0 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, in a rivalry match that felt far more significant than an ordinary international friendly. At the center of the celebration was 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who etched his name into the history books with a spectacular goal that made him the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history.

Sullivan, who turned 17 just five days before the match, started in midfield as Mauricio Pochettino continued to introduce a new generation of American talent. The Philadelphia Union teenager looked fearless from the opening whistle, combining his technical ability with an aggressive approach to pressing and defending from the front.

His historic moment came in the 63rd minute. With the United States already leading 1-0, Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel attempted to play the ball out from the back. Sullivan anticipated the pass, stepped in to intercept it and immediately recognized that Rangel was well off his line.

Rather than hesitate, Sullivan took his chance.

From roughly 30 yards out, he calmly lifted the ball over the stranded goalkeeper. The shot sailed through the air and dropped underneath the crossbar, giving the United States a 2-0 advantage and sending Sullivan sprinting toward the corner in celebration. His teammates quickly surrounded him, while Pochettino later embraced the teenager after taking him off.

The goal was historic for more than just the occasion. Sullivan became the youngest player ever to score for the USMNT at 17 years and five days old, surpassing a record that had been set only days earlier by fellow teenager Mathis Albert. Sullivan had also become the youngest player in the starting lineup against Mexico.

But the goal was only part of Sullivan’s performance. Throughout the match, he demonstrated the confidence and awareness that have made him one of the most intriguing young players in American soccer. His pressing helped disrupt Mexico’s buildup, and his ability to recognize space gave the United States another dangerous attacking outlet. His historic finish was ultimately the reward for the work he had been putting in throughout the night.

Sullivan’s breakthrough came as part of an impressive overall performance from a youthful American side. Julian Hall opened the scoring in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Rangel after Gio Reyna helped create the opportunity. Hall, just 18, continued his remarkable start to his international career by scoring in his third consecutive appearance for the United States.

Mexico struggled to respond as the match progressed. The United States weathered early pressure, grew into the game and eventually took control. Diego Kochen also made a crucial save in the second half to preserve the American lead before Mexico was reduced to 10 men following Mateo Chávez’s red card.

Malik Tillman added a third goal in the 85th minute, putting the result beyond doubt and completing a convincing 3-0 victory.

For Pochettino, the result offered another encouraging glimpse at the future of the program. The United States entered a new World Cup cycle looking to develop its next generation, and against its biggest regional rival, several of those young players delivered.

None, however, made a bigger mark than Cavan Sullivan.

At just 17, he has already scored against Mexico, rewritten the USMNT record book and announced himself on one of the biggest stages in American soccer. If Saturday night was any indication, Sullivan’s historic goal may be remembered not simply as a record, but as the beginning of something much bigger.
