MICHIGAN STATE SWEEPS UCLA IN PAULEY PAVILION

Michigan State defeated UCLA in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-14, during the Bruins’ Big Ten home opener Friday night. The loss dropped UCLA to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while Michigan State improved to 12-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. The match marked UCLA’s first home appearance since Aug. 29 after 11 consecutive road matches.

Michigan State controlled the match with a more efficient offense, recording 40 kills and hitting .284. UCLA finished with 28 kills, 24 attack errors and a .039 hitting percentage. Maggie Li led the Bruins with eight kills and four digs, while Marianna Singletary added seven kills and three blocks. Brooke Harwood contributed four kills and three blocks, and Eliana Urzua recorded three kills and two blocks.

The defeat ended UCLA’s return to Pauley Pavilion on a difficult note. The Bruins had recently swept Northwestern after losing to Indiana, hitting .371 with 51 kills and 8.5 blocks in that victory. Against Michigan State, however, UCLA could not reproduce that offensive rhythm, while the Spartans’ balanced attack and strong net play secured the sweep.

UCLA will have little time to regroup, with Michigan scheduled to visit Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night. The quick turnaround gives the Bruins an immediate chance to respond as they continue a demanding Big Ten schedule that includes Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon and USC.
