Toluca put on an attacking clinic Saturday night, overwhelming Atlas 5–2 at the Estadio Nemesio Díez in a statement victory in the Liga MX Apertura.
The hosts wasted little time taking control. Alexis Vega opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, and Jesús Angulo doubled Toluca’s advantage just three minutes later. Federico Viñas then added a third in the 29th minute, sending Toluca into halftime with a commanding 3–0 lead.
Atlas needed a quick response after the break, and Florián Monzón provided it in the 51st minute to give the visitors a lifeline. But Toluca never allowed the comeback to gather serious momentum.
The Diablos Rojos restored their control and continued to punish Atlas’ defense, eventually finishing with five goals. Atlas managed to add a second goal, but Toluca’s attacking quality proved too much on the night.
The 5–2 scoreline capped an impressive performance from a Toluca side that entered the match in excellent form following its Leagues Cup triumph. The result also underlined just how dangerous Antonio Mohamed’s team can be when its attacking players find space and rhythm.
For Atlas, the defeat was a painful reminder of its defensive struggles. After competing near the top half of the Apertura table coming into the match, Atlas now has to regroup quickly after conceding five goals on the road.
Toluca, meanwhile, leaves the night with three points, seven goals in the match and plenty of momentum as the Apertura campaign continues.
