San Jose’s prospects opened the 2026 Rookie Faceoff with an explosive performance at Tech CU Arena, combining eight goals, physical play and a breakout night from several of the organization’s young talents.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks offered an early glimpse of their future Saturday night, and it came with little hesitation.
Playing in front of the home crowd at Tech CU Arena, San Jose’s prospects overwhelmed the Los Angeles Kings 8–1 in their opening game of the 2026 Rookie Faceoff, turning a rivalry matchup into a showcase for one of the organization’s emerging young groups.
San Jose Takes Control Early
The Sharks established control almost immediately. Filip Bystedt opened the scoring just 4:09 into the first period, redirecting a Jake Boltmann shot past Kings goaltender Carter George. From there, San Jose continued to apply pressure. Carson Wetsch added another goal before setting up Andre Gasseau on a two-on-one rush as the Sharks quickly built a 3–0 advantage.
Los Angeles briefly responded through Vojtech Cihar, who cut the deficit to 3–1, but San Jose answered before the end of the opening period. Gasseau scored his second goal of the night while the Sharks were shorthanded, giving the hosts a 4–1 lead after 20 minutes.
Young Sharks Steal the Spotlight
Carson Wetsch continued his standout performance in the second period, adding another goal and finishing the night with two goals and two assists. Andre Gasseau also delivered a strong offensive performance, recording two goals and an assist as San Jose continued to pull away.
Ivar Stenberg then made his mark in the third period. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft scored twice in just 25 seconds, providing one of the night’s clearest examples of the offensive talent San Jose hopes to develop around its emerging core. Michael Misa also contributed two assists in the victory.
Intensity Rises in the Third
The third period brought a noticeable increase in intensity as the game became more physical. Several confrontations broke out between the teams, adding an edge to a matchup San Jose had already taken firm control of on the scoreboard.
Even with the result no longer in doubt, the Sharks continued to play with energy and respond physically, closing out an 8–1 victory that highlighted both the skill and competitive edge of their young group.
For the Sharks, the lopsided score was only part of the story. The performance offered an encouraging look at the organization’s next generation, with several prospects showing the speed, confidence and competitiveness San Jose hopes will carry into the years ahead.
