SAN DIEGO, CA — For over 80 minutes, San Diego FC looked in control of a statement win at Snapdragon Stadium. But two late goals from LAFC flipped the script, forcing a 2-2 draw that felt more like points lost than earned.
San Diego came out with clear intent and wasted no time imposing themselves on the match. In the 7th minute, Anders Dreyer delivered a dangerous corner that found Marcus Ingvartsen, who rose above the defense and powered a header into the back of the net to give the home side an early lead.
The pressure didn’t stop there. San Diego remained aggressive, finding space in transition and repeatedly testing LAFC’s back line. Their control carried into the second half, and in the 71st minute, Dreyer once again created the moment. After creating separation from LAFC’s Segura, he slipped a pass into Ingvartsen, who timed his run perfectly and finished for his second goal of the night, putting San Diego firmly ahead at 2-0.
With experience on their side, LAFC began to adjust. They slowed the tempo, leaned into possession, and pushed San Diego deeper into their own half. Still, the home side stayed organized and compact. Defensive clearances, second-ball wins, and disciplined shape helped maintain control, even as LAFC committed more numbers forward.
The momentum shifted late.
In the 82nd minute, LAFC broke through as Denis Bouanga finished off a quick attacking sequence to cut the deficit in half. The goal injected life into the visitors and changed the rhythm of the match.
Then came the final blow.
Deep into stoppage time, Ryan Hollingshead rose to meet a cross and headed home the equalizer, leveling the match at 2-2 and silencing a crowd that had been on the verge of celebrating a signature win.
Despite LAFC holding a slight edge in possession, San Diego’s approach was effective throughout much of the night. Their ability to create chances through quick transitions and wide play kept them dangerous, while both sides maintained strong passing accuracy in a technically clean match.
But games like this don’t always reward control.
San Diego FC showed structure, intensity, and attacking quality—enough to earn all three points. Yet the final minutes exposed the fine margins required to close out matches at this level. It was a performance full of positives, but one that ultimately leaves a sense of what could have been.
San Diego FC will look to regroup as they prepare to face the Seattle Sounders at home on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 PM, aiming to turn strong performances into complete results.
