Inter Miami’s 2026 Leagues Cup campaign came to an end Wednesday night after a 3-2 loss to Club León at Nu Stadium.
Miami entered its final Phase One match needing a regulation victory—and help from other results—to keep its hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive. Instead, Daniel Arcila scored twice for León, including the late winning goal, to eliminate the Herons from the tournament.
Dániel Pintér gave Miami the lead late in the first half, redirecting Ian Fray’s attempt into the back of the net. The goal sent the hosts into halftime ahead 1-0, but León quickly responded after the break.
Arcila scored his first goal shortly after halftime, finishing a pass from Díber Cambindo to bring the visitors level.
Lionel Messi entered the match at the start of the second half after beginning the night on the bench. The 39-year-old had flown back to Miami on Tuesday night after attending the funeral of his father, Jorge Messi, near Rosario, Argentina.
Messi immediately added energy to Miami’s attack. His corner helped create the opportunity for Yannick Bright, who scored to restore the Herons’ lead just minutes after León’s equalizer.
Miami’s advantage did not last long. Juan Domínguez tied the match at 2-2 in the 60th minute, setting up a tense finish as Miami pushed for the victory it needed to remain alive.
León delivered the decisive blow in the 82nd minute. Cambindo controlled the ball inside the penalty area and found Arcila, whose powerful finish beat goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo. The goal was initially reviewed before being awarded, giving Arcila his second of the night and León a 3-2 lead.
Messi and Miami continued to create chances during the closing minutes. The Argentine had an attempt saved by Óscar García, while Gonzalo Luján was also denied in stoppage time. León’s defense held firm through the final whistle.
The defeat leaves Miami with three points from its three Phase One matches. The club opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Atlético de San Luis before suffering consecutive losses to Monterrey and León.
It marks the first time Inter Miami has been eliminated during the opening phase of the Leagues Cup. The club won the tournament in 2023 and reached the final again in 2025.
Inter Miami will now turn its attention back to Major League Soccer, beginning with Saturday’s road match against Nashville SC.
