WASHINGTON, D.C. — August 29, 2026 — A sold-out Audi Field was packed with energy Saturday night as DC United battled Los Angeles FC to a tense draw in front of a roaring home crowd.
The spotlight was impossible to miss. LAFC arrived in Washington with global stars Heung Min Son (#7) and Hugo Lloris (#1) drawing much of the attention from fans and media throughout the night. But once the whistle blew, DC United made it clear that the star power on the opposite side would not intimidate them.
Playing in a dominant 4-3-3 formation, both clubs produced a physical and disciplined match built around defensive organization. DC United’s back line stood strong against an LAFC attack that controlled much of the possession, limiting the visitors to just one shot on target despite LAFC holding 61% possession.
DC United finished the match with 39% possession but created three big chances, showing that the home side could still threaten despite spending long stretches without the ball. LAFC, meanwhile, struggled to turn its possession advantage into meaningful opportunities.
Defensively, both teams were evenly matched in several key areas. DC United recorded six interceptions, while LAFC finished with five. Both sides registered 10 total tackles, while DC United recovered possession 39 times compared with 55 recoveries for LAFC.
The physical intensity never crossed the line into disciplinary trouble. The referee showed zero yellow cards and zero red cards throughout the match. DC United was called for 11 fouls, while LAFC committed six.
For DC United, the result represents a strong defensive showing against one of MLS’s most recognizable sides. LAFC may have controlled the ball, but United’s organization and willingness to absorb pressure kept the visitors from finding the breakthrough they needed.
For the sold-out crowd at Audi Field, the night was about more than the final result. It was an opportunity to see two of the biggest names in world football, Son and Lloris, take the field in Washington while watching DC United stand toe-to-toe with a formidable LAFC squad.
DC United will now turn its attention to its next challenge on the road. United travels to Cincinnati on Saturday, September 5, to face FC Cincinnati.
