Belgium came from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3-2 in an unforgettable FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match and book a place in the Round of 16.
Belgium refused to give up
With just minutes remaining and trailing by two goals, the Red Devils produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating Senegal 3-2 after extra time to secure a dramatic place in the Round of 16.
For more than 80 minutes, it looked like Senegal was on its way to one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. The African side played with confidence, defended with discipline, and punished Belgium on the counterattack.
Habib Diarra opened the scoring before Ismaïla Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage, leaving Belgium with a mountain to climb and their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
But the momentum changed late in the match.
Romelu Lukaku sparked the comeback with a crucial goal that reignited Belgium’s belief. Soon after, Youri Tielemans found the equalizer, forcing extra time and completing an incredible turnaround that stunned the Senegalese players and fans alike.
The drama wasn’t over.
Deep into extra time, Belgium was awarded a penalty after a VAR review. Tielemans stepped up with nerves of steel and converted from the spot, sealing a 3-2 victory in one of the latest winning goals ever scored in World Cup history.
The victory sends Belgium into the Round of 16, where they will face the United States in another highly anticipated knockout clash. After surviving one of the toughest tests of the tournament, the Red Devils know they will need a much stronger performance to continue their World Cup journey.
For Senegal, the defeat is heartbreaking. They were only minutes away from eliminating one of Europe’s traditional powers, but despite the painful ending, they leave the tournament having shown courage, quality, and the ability to compete with the world’s best teams.
