The 2026 USL Championship season kicked off with drama and intensity on Saturday afternoon as Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defeated Loudoun United FC 3–2 at Segra Field.
Under sunny skies and swirling winds, fans from both sides created a lively atmosphere for the season opener, setting the tone for a competitive and entertaining match.
Loudoun struck first in the 19th minute when Thorleifur Úlfarsson found the back of the net, giving the home side an early 1–0 lead and energizing the crowd. The advantage, however, didn’t last long. Pittsburgh responded in the 25th minute when striker Albert Dikwa converted a penalty to level the match at 1–1.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second half. In the 47th minute, a chaotic corner kick sequence bounced around the penalty area before defender Bradley Sample headed the ball goalward. The attempt ricocheted off the post and ping-ponged across the line, putting Pittsburgh ahead 2–1.
The match continued to swing dramatically as both teams pressed forward. In the 68th minute, Sam Bassett extended Pittsburgh’s lead to 3–1 with a well-taken finish, seemingly putting the Riverhounds in control.
But Loudoun refused to fade quietly. Just two minutes later, Sean Young responded with a goal in the 70th minute to bring the home side back within one, reigniting the crowd and setting up a tense final stretch.
The match also carried a concerning moment late in the first half when Loudoun midfielder Pedro Santos (#10) suffered an injury that forced him out of the game, dampening the mood during an otherwise electric opener.
Despite Loudoun’s late push and strong support from the stands, Pittsburgh held firm defensively to secure the 3–2 victory and begin their campaign with three points.
Loudoun United FC will look to bounce back quickly as they return to Segra Field to face Miami FC on March 21.
For the season’s first match, the atmosphere, the goals, and the drama delivered exactly what supporters hope for in a USL Championship opener — a reminder that the road ahead promises plenty of excitement.
