United States vs. Peru: A New Generation Emerges

The United States men’s national soccer team began its new World Cup cycle with a 4–1 victory over Peru on September 26, 2026, in Orlando, Florida. The match was particularly significant because it marked the beginning of a new phase for the U.S. team under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Alongside established players, Pochettino introduced a large group of young players seeking their first senior international experience.

The United States opened the scoring in the fourth minute through 19-year-old Justin Ellis. Making his senior international debut, Ellis headed a free kick from Gio Reyna into the net. His goal was notable because it was reportedly the fastest modern-era goal scored by a U.S. player in his international debut (U.S. Soccer, 2026b). Peru responded in the 23rd minute when Gianluca Lapadula headed in a cross from Yoshimar Yotún, leaving the teams tied 1–1 at halftime.

The second half showcased the United States’ young talent. Malik Tillman restored the American lead by converting a penalty in the 66th minute after debutant Mathis Albert was fouled following a dangerous run into the penalty area. Six minutes later, 18-year-old Julian Hall scored his first international goal after receiving a pass from Sebastian Berhalter. Berhalter later scored the fourth goal in the 90th minute, with Hall providing the assist (U.S. Soccer, 2026b).

Several newcomers attracted particular attention. Sixteen-year-old Cavan Sullivan became the fourth-youngest player ever to make his senior debut for the United States. Sullivan demonstrated attacking confidence before being substituted in the second half. Peyton Miller also started at left back, giving another teenager an opportunity to compete at the senior level.

In total, 11 American players earned their first senior caps against Peru: Mathis Albert, Justin Ellis, Zavier Gozo, Julian Hall, Diego Kochen, Adri Mehmeti, Peyton Miller, Neil Pierre, Brooklyn Raines, Cavan Sullivan, and Frankie Westfield (U.S. Soccer, 2026b). Their appearances reflected Pochettino’s willingness to evaluate younger players early in the new four-year cycle.

The victory also demonstrated the importance of combining emerging talent with experienced players. Tyler Adams captained the team, while Reyna and Tillman contributed directly to the scoring. This mixture provides Pochettino with opportunities to evaluate both established players and potential future contributors.

Although one friendly cannot determine which newcomers will become long-term members of the national team, the Peru match provided an important first step. Ellis, Hall, Sullivan, Miller, and the other debutants gained valuable senior experience while helping the United States begin its preparation for the 2030 World Cup.
