BARIBO DOES IT AGAIN: DC United Salvages Thrilling Draw at Audi Field

Under warm, humid skies and threatening clouds that left portions of the pitch muddy, DC United battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a spirited 2-2 draw against Nashville SC on Saturday night at Audi Field. The atmosphere was electric throughout the evening as the club celebrated El Salvador Day, with a passionate crowd creating one of the loudest environments of the season. Despite seeing just 39% of the possession, DC United made every opportunity count, showing resilience and urgency in a performance that kept supporters on their feet until the final whistle.

Nashville SC struck first in the 32nd minute when Sam Surridge calmly converted a penalty kick to give the visitors the lead. Just eight minutes later, Shakur Mohammed doubled the advantage with a composed finish after a well-worked attacking sequence, sending Nashville into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead. While Nashville controlled possession through its 4-2-3-1 system, the formation often left Surridge isolated up front, relying on quick transitions rather than sustained attacking pressure.

Coming out of the break, DC United looked like a different side. Operating in a fluid 4-4-2 formation, the Black-and-Red pressed higher, won second balls, and began creating consistent chances. Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when Silvan Hefti found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half and inject life into both the team and the Audi Field faithful. The momentum continued to swing in DC’s favor as wave after wave of attacks tested the Nashville defense.

The equalizer finally arrived in the 77th minute through the league’s hottest striker, Tai Baribo, who once again delivered in a crucial moment to make it 2-2. The goal capped off an impressive second-half comeback and rewarded a DC United side that consistently made the most of its limited time on the ball. Although Nashville finished with 61% possession, DC United generated seven shots on target compared to just two for the visitors, highlighting the efficiency and danger of their attacking play whenever opportunities arose.

As the match entered its closing stages, the intensity only continued to build. Referee Ricardo Montero signaled 10 minutes of second-half stoppage time, giving both clubs one final opportunity to find a dramatic winner. The extended added time produced several tense moments and kept the supporters on the edge of their seats, but neither side could break the deadlock as the final whistle confirmed a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

The match also featured a physical edge, with DC United committing 14 fouls to Nashville’s 10. The Black-and-Red received two yellow cards, while Nashville was shown three. Despite the statistics favoring Nashville in possession, DC United’s willingness to capitalize on every attacking opportunity proved to be the difference in salvaging a valuable point at home.

DC United now quickly turns its attention to Wednesday, August 5, when it welcomes Loudoun United to Audi Field in another important matchup as the club looks to build on the momentum from an impressive second-half comeback.
