LeBron James is taking his talents to Philadelphia.
James will sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania. The deal reportedly includes a player option and represents a significant pay cut for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, who is prioritizing another opportunity to compete for a championship over a final major payday.
The move will send James to the fourth franchise of his legendary career following previous stops with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers.
James confirmed the decision Friday in an emotional statement posted to social media, revealing that he had seriously considered retirement after the conclusion of the 2025–26 season.
“I thought I was done when the season ended,” James wrote. “I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game.”
James said his comments during his final postgame press conference of the season were genuine, explaining that he needed time away from basketball to determine whether he still had the passion required to continue playing.
“I still truly love this game, and I have more to give,” James wrote.
After spending several weeks with his family and considering his future, James ultimately decided to return for what he described as his final journey. The 41-year-old made it clear that his decision was not motivated by money or location, but by his desire to continue competing at the highest level.
“I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind,” James wrote. “I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”
James now joins a Philadelphia roster built around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, giving the 76ers one of the NBA’s most accomplished players as they attempt to contend for the franchise’s first championship since 1983. His arrival immediately adds another experienced playmaker, scorer and leader to a team with championship expectations.
The contract’s relatively small value will also allow Philadelphia to preserve greater financial flexibility while adding a four-time NBA champion and four-time Most Valuable Player. James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds during the 2025–26 season, showing that he can still contribute at a high level entering his record-extending 24th NBA campaign.
James spent eight seasons with the Lakers and helped the franchise capture the 2020 NBA championship. He closed his announcement by thanking Los Angeles while also recognizing the other cities that have played significant roles throughout his career.
“Thank you LA,” James wrote. “Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always be home!”
For James, the move represents one final opportunity to chase the feeling that has defined much of his career: competing for an NBA championship.
