Harry Kane delivered when England needed him most, scoring a second-half brace to complete a comeback against DR Congo and send the Three Lions into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
A fearless DR Congo side stunned the Three Lions early and looked capable of pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026. But when the pressure reached its peak, Harry Kane reminded everyone why he remains one of the game’s elite strikers.
The England captain scored twice in the final 15 minutes to erase an early deficit and seal a dramatic 2-1 victory, sending Gareth Southgate’s men into the Round of 16 after a match that tested both their character and composure.
DR Congo strikes first
England’s game plan was turned upside down just seven minutes into the contest.
DR Congo defender Chancel Mbemba spotted space down the left flank and delivered a perfectly weighted cross that found Brian Cipenga. The winger timed his run to perfection before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper, giving the African side a dream start and silencing the English supporters.
Suddenly, England found itself chasing the match much earlier than expected.
England dominates possession but struggles to finish
The Three Lions controlled the ball for long stretches, but breaking through DR Congo’s disciplined defensive shape proved far more difficult than anticipated.
Jude Bellingham came closest before halftime with two powerful headers, only to be denied by outstanding reflex saves from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who kept his side in front with a memorable performance.
Harry Kane also had an opportunity after good work from Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford, but his effort drifted just wide of the post.
