Over the last week, rumors began circulating that Los Angeles native Mauricio Cuevas was on Club Santos Laguna’s radar and were in talks with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Today, July 1st, the club says goodbye to their homegrown defender over the last few years with a touching article and a post highlighting his time in the decorated club.
Mauricio Cuevas began his journey in the LA Galaxy Academy in 2016. Mauricio Cuevas always displayed a determination to do big things on and off the field. During his time at the LA Galaxy academy, Mauricio Cuevas radiated the power that LA Galaxy was searching for as they signed him to his first professional contract with LA Galaxy II in 2019. In this time, Cuevas tallied four goals and five assists within two seasons of the USL Championship.
Fast forward to 2023, Mauricio Cuevas returned to his home in Los Angeles to form a part of the LA Galaxy with a first-team contract. Greg Vanney described Cuevas to be a versatile fullback, which was proven to the fans throughout the seasons. One year later, Mauricio Cuevas was part of the team that led the LA Galaxy to their 2024 MLS Cup Champions title. Mauricio Cuevas made his mark on the team scoring his first MLS goal in 2024 against one of LA Galaxy’s most anticipated rivals which solidified their 3-0 win and a push towards reaching the final.
Mauricio Cuevas’ future is now in Liga MX club, Club Santos Laguna in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. After rumors circulated that LA Galaxy and Santos had reached a principal agreement for the transfer; it was later confirmed that the agreement was set. Cuevas signed a 3 year contract with Santos Laguna and has been officially welcomed per Club Santos’ social media.
With the Liga MX 2026 Apertura nearing its start, Mauricio Cuevas is expected to become a strength for the team, as many Santos fans are sharing their excitement to see the club’s new recruitment shine on the field. Mauricio Cuevas is of Mexican heritage and background, so this move is a very important role for him to shine in Mexican soccer. Although LA Galaxy fans are heartbroken to see their homegrown player go, many of them share supportive words and remind the Los Angeles Naitve and LA Galaxy Homegrown player that “Once A G, Always A G”.
Although many Liga MX teams were showing interest in Mauricio Cuevas, Club Santos Laguna were quick to get into contact and begin talks with LA Galaxy, ultimately being the team to secure an amazing player.
Santos’ first game of the Liga MX 2026 Apertura will be on Saturday, July 18th at 6:00 PM PST against Rayados de Monterrey.
