Mexico City, Mexico — After a one-hour rain delay pushed back kickoff at Mexico City Stadium, Mexico made sure the wait was worth it.
In front of a roaring home crowd of over 80,000 fans, El Tri delivered one of the most memorable nights of their 2026 FIFA World Cup run, defeating Ecuador 2-0 in a Round of 32 battle filled with energy, emotion, and drama. With first-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, Mexico punched its ticket to the Round of 16 and kept the dream alive on home soil.
The storm that rolled through Mexico City before kickoff brought heavy rain, lightning concerns, and a long delay, but it did nothing to cool down the atmosphere inside the stadium. By the time the teams finally walked out, the crowd was already in full voice. Green, white, and red filled the stands, chants echoed around the stadium, and every Mexican touch of the ball was met with a wave of noise.
From the opening whistle, Mexico played with purpose. Ecuador entered the match with confidence after surviving a difficult group stage, but Mexico’s speed and pressure quickly put La Tri on the back foot. El Tri pressed high, moved the ball with confidence, and fed off the energy of the home crowd.
Then, in the 22nd minute, Mexico found its breakthrough.
Julián Quiñones timed his run perfectly, drove into the box, cut inside, and fired a powerful finish past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez. The ball hit the back of the net, and Mexico City Stadium exploded.
1-0 Mexico.
Ecuador tried to respond, but Mexico refused to let the momentum slip. Just nine minutes later, El Tri struck again.
In the 31st minute, Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s lead with a brilliant finish into the top corner. After Ecuador failed to fully clear the danger, Jiménez pounced on the opportunity and delivered a composed, clinical strike that sent the stadium into another frenzy.
2-0 Mexico.
The first half belonged entirely to El Tri. Mexico looked sharp, disciplined, and fearless. Quiñones caused constant problems in the attack, Jiménez led the line with confidence, and the midfield controlled the rhythm of the match. Ecuador had moments in transition, including a dangerous early chance from John Yeboah, but Mexico’s defense stood strong.
The second half became a different kind of test. Ecuador pushed numbers forward, searching for a way back into the match, but Mexico stayed organized. César Montes, Johan Vásquez, Jorge Sánchez, and Jesús Gallardo held firm, while goalkeeper Raúl Rangel handled every dangerous moment with composure.
As the minutes ticked away, Ecuador grew frustrated. Mexico dropped deeper at times, but never looked overwhelmed. Every clearance, tackle, and blocked cross was met with another roar from the crowd. The stadium could sense history getting closer.
Late in stoppage time, Ecuador’s difficult night got worse when Piero Hincapié was shown a red card after an off-ball incident. The sending off ended any final hopes of an Ecuador comeback and added one last dramatic twist to an already intense knockout match.
When the final whistle blew, the celebration was immediate. Mexico’s players embraced near midfield, the bench spilled onto the pitch, and the fans inside Mexico City Stadium let out one final deafening roar.
Ecuador exits the tournament after a tough, emotional battle, but Mexico marches on with confidence, momentum, and the backing of an entire nation.
After a rain delay, two first-half goals, a late red card, and a stadium full of belief, Mexico’s World Cup dream is still alive.
