The Cuscatlán Stadium witnessed a night filled with hope, passion, and heartbreak. El Salvador dominated much of the first half against Guatemala, driven by a packed crowd that never stopped cheering. However, despite their control and several chances, La Selecta couldn’t find the back of the net.
Is There Still Hope for El Salvador?
Just seconds into the second half, in the 46th minute, Guatemala struck with a goal that completely changed the game. That lone goal proved decisive, as El Salvador pushed forward with more heart than precision but couldn’t manage to equalize.
With this defeat, El Salvador’s path to the
2026 World Cup has become increasingly difficult. Suriname and Panama lead Group A with 6 points each, followed by Guatemala with 5, while El Salvador sits at the bottom with only 3. The dream of reaching their third World Cup is still alive – but now it depends on a perfect finish and a bit of help from others.
