New Mexico dominated UCLA at the Rose Bowl Friday night, beating the Bruins 35-10. The Lobos seized control early and never let go, going up 14-0 by the second quarter and pulling away in the fourth. New Mexico’s offense was well balanced: Jack Layne threw 12-of-16 for 152 yards and two touchdowns, while Damon Bankston piled up 154 rushing yards (on 15 carries) and scored once on the ground and once through the air. UCLA managed a few flashes — a 12-yard touchdown pass from Nico Iamaleava to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala and a long 51-yard field goal — but those moments were too few and too late.
The loss drops UCLA to 0-3 on the season, and leaves a lot of questions unanswered about their offense and defense. Penalties were a major problem — UCLA was flagged 13 times for 116 yards versus only four for New Mexico. On the other side, New Mexico’s rushing attack and consistent execution enabled them to dominate time of possession (about 36-22), wear down the Bruins, and finish with a convincing road-style performance in Pasadena.
