One day before the World Series opens in Milwaukee, half of the Game 1 pitching matchup is still a mystery. The Brewers made it official Tuesday: 24-year-old Jacob Misiorowski will take the ball Friday at American Family Field (as La Momentum reported). The Rays, meanwhile, still haven’t said who’ll oppose him.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal floated the scenario gaining traction inside Tampa Bay’s front office: hold ace Drew Rasmussen for Game 2 to buy him extra rest, and hand the Game 1 start to Nick Martinez — with Freddy Peralta, the ALCS MVP, lined up for Game 3. According to Rosenthal, Rays officials were “deliberating over how to proceed” on Wednesday.
Rasmussen would be the conventional pick. He opened both the AL Division Series and the AL Championship Series for Tampa Bay and carries a 1.29 ERA with 23 strikeouts against three walks across 21 postseason innings. But an extra day of rest for the ace could be worth more than the prestige of the opener — and Martinez has been a steady rotation arm all October.
Whatever Tampa Bay decides, the announcement has to come soon: first pitch of Game 1 is Friday in Milwaukee, 44 years after the Brewers’ last World Series game.
