CARSON, Calif. — LAFC delivered an impressive performance in the return of Major League Soccer action, defeating “El Trafico”, rival LA Galaxy 3–0. Despite the Galaxy controlling much of the possession throughout the match, LAFC capitalized on its opportunities in the attacking third, using clinical finishing and relentless pressure to secure a convincing victory.
LAFC signaled its attacking intent early in the seventh minute when Heung-Min Son fired a shot from just outside the penalty area after receiving a pass from Denis Bouanga on the left wing. Although the attempt did not result in a goal, it served as an early indication of the offensive pressure LAFC would maintain throughout the match.
The rivalry match quickly became physical, with several hard challenges leading to multiple yellow cards. In the 17th minute, LA Galaxy’s Erik Thommy suffered an injury following a defensive collision with Mathieu Choinière, resulting in a foul against the Galaxy.
LAFC broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Mark Delgado scored after a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg deflected off both Delgado and Galaxy defender Jorgen Glesnes before finding the back of the net. Ryan Hollingshead initiated the play with a pass from just beyond midfield to Shaffelburg, who created space on the left side before delivering the decisive cross. The goal gave LAFC a 1–0 advantage.
The Galaxy struggled to create quality scoring opportunities in the opening half. Their first shot on target did not come until the 40th minute, when a crowded sequence inside the penalty area followed a free kick.
LAFC doubled its lead in the 43rd minute after a penalty was awarded when Carlos Emiro Garcés Haak attempted to clear the ball but instead caught Denis Bouanga on the back of the calf. Bouanga calmly converted the penalty kick, extending LAFC’s lead to 2–0 before halftime.
LAFC put the match out of reach in the 56th minute. Heung-Min Son drove into the right side of the penalty area and played the ball to Delgado, who returned it with a one-touch pass. Son finished the give-and-go with a right-footed strike, scoring LAFC’s third goal and sealing the 3–0 victory.
Although the Galaxy finished with the majority of possession, LAFC made better use of its time on the ball by consistently threatening in the attacking third. The combination of efficient finishing, organized defending, and sustained pressure ultimately proved to be the difference in a dominant performance as MLS resumed competition.
