Club América of Liga MX confirmed on its social media accounts that former LA Galaxy defensive midfielder Edwin Cerrillo is the club’s newest signing. Cerrillo, who is valued at $3.5 million by Transfermarkt, becomes the Mexican club’s second addition of the Apertura season after the signing of Colombian forward Óscar Perea six days earlier.
Cerrillo is coming off a minor ankle injury sustained during training with the Galaxy, which kept him out of the club’s draw against FC Dallas. However, Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said after the match that the injury was not serious and that Cerrillo should be available to play for Club América soon.
Cerrillo’s departure leaves the Galaxy with a vacancy at defensive midfield as the club continues its search for a designated player. Casemiro appeared to be a potential target after previously saying he wanted to join the Galaxy. However, he was later announced as Inter Miami’s newest signing, a move that has since become the subject of a league tampering investigation.
“Look, I know there’s been a few things said. The league is going to release their findings. It’s true that Casemiro called and said that he always wanted to play at Inter Miami. It’s also true that that came two months after he told us that he only wanted to play for the Galaxy,” Kuntz said after being asked about the investigation.
With Cerrillo gone, the Galaxy will need additional depth in defensive midfield, raising questions about how the club will fill the position and whether its designated player spot will be used on a defensive midfielder or another attacking player.
