Liverpool FC continued its preseason tour of the United States with a 1–0 victory over Wrexham AFC on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored the match’s only goal in the 75th minute. The Liverpool substitute moved onto his right foot before his shot took a deflection off Wrexham defender Lewis Brunt and found its way into the net.
Although Liverpool secured the victory, the Reds struggled to consistently create clear scoring opportunities. Manager Andoni Iraola selected an experimental team that included several academy players and younger members of the first-team squad.
Dominik Szoboszlai was one of the most experienced players available and wore the captain’s armband. The Hungarian midfielder attempted to provide creativity alongside Harvey Elliott and Trey Nyoni, but Liverpool frequently lacked a natural focal point at the front of its attack.
Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were not included in the matchday squad after recently returning to preseason training following their participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Liverpool elected not to rush either player into action, with Iraola expecting them to receive their first preseason minutes later in the week.
Their absences were noticeable. Without Isak’s movement and finishing through the middle or Wirtz’s ability to create chances between defensive lines, Liverpool’s attack lacked some of the speed and precision expected from its full-strength lineup.
Young attackers Joshua Abe, Lewis Koumas and Trent Kone-Doherty were given opportunities, but Wrexham remained organized and limited Liverpool throughout much of the match. Abe nearly marked his senior debut with a goal during the opening stages, while Wrexham also created opportunities against a youthful Liverpool defense.
The breakthrough finally arrived through Ngumoha, whose direct approach provided the attacking spark Liverpool had been missing. Despite the fortunate deflection, the goal rewarded the winger for taking on his defender and looking to create something himself.
The result gave Iraola his second victory in as many preseason matches as Liverpool’s head coach. More importantly, it allowed several young players to gain experience while the club gradually reintegrates its established internationals.
Liverpool will conclude the American portion of its preseason schedule against Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, August 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, with Isak and Wirtz potentially in line to make their first appearances of the preseason.
