PALO ALTO, Calif. — The LA Galaxy showed resilience in one of Major League Soccer’s fiercest rivalries, earning a 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes in the 105th edition of the California Clásico at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night. While the result won’t completely satisfy Greg Vanney’s squad, the point could prove valuable as the Galaxy continue their push to climb the Western Conference standings.

The visitors wasted little time making an impact. In the 13th minute, Joseph Paintsil finished off a well-executed counterattack after excellent build-up play involving Harbor Miller and Marco Reus. Paintsil’s composed finish gave LA Galaxy an early lead and rewarded a confident opening spell from the visitors.
San Jose gradually found its rhythm in the second half and eventually pulled level in the 63rd minute when Reid Roberts capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area following a dangerous free kick that struck the crossbar. The goal shifted momentum toward the home side as the Earthquakes searched for a winner.
The game’s defining moment came deep into stoppage time.
San Jose was awarded a penalty, giving the Earthquakes a golden opportunity to complete the comeback. Instead, JT Marcinkowski delivered the biggest play of the night. Facing his former club, the Galaxy goalkeeper guessed correctly and produced a dramatic save to preserve the draw, sparking celebrations from the traveling supporters and his teammates alike.

Although the Galaxy couldn’t secure all three points, there were encouraging signs. Paintsil continued his strong form in front of goal, Marco Reus orchestrated several dangerous attacks, and the defense showed character when it mattered most. Marcinkowski’s heroics ensured LA returned to Southern California with a valuable road point against one of the Western Conference’s top teams.
The result leaves the Galaxy searching for consistency after a difficult stretch of the season, but the performance in a hostile rivalry atmosphere provides momentum heading into next weekend’s home matchup with FC Dallas.
