WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 25, 2026) — Audi Field erupted on Saturday night as DC United secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Toronto FC, with Tai Baribo converting a penalty deep into stoppage time after a VAR review confirmed the decisive call.
The win showcased DC United’s resilience in front of an energetic home crowd that created one of the loudest atmospheres Audi Field has seen this season. The supporters remained behind the Black-and-Red from kickoff until the final whistle, providing the momentum that ultimately helped push the hosts over the finish line.
DC United lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, while Toronto FC countered with a 3-4-2-1, creating an entertaining tactical battle throughout the evening. Although Toronto controlled 55% of the possession compared to DC United’s 45%, the home side consistently found dangerous opportunities in transition and capitalized when it mattered most.
The opening breakthrough came in the 41st minute, when defender Kye Rowles found the back of the net to give DC United a deserved 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Toronto FC increased its pressure after the break and eventually found an equalizer in the 76th B. One of the visitors’ five corner kicks resulted in a powerful strike that Sean Johnson was unable to completely deny, bringing Toronto level and setting up a tense finish.
Despite conceding, DC United continued to press forward. The Black-and-Red earned eight corner kicks throughout the match and repeatedly challenged Toronto’s defensive line, creating several dangerous scoring opportunities.
The defining moment arrived in the 90+10th minute. Following a critical incident inside the penalty area, referee Sergii Boiko halted play to consult the Video Assistant Referee. After reviewing the play, Boiko confirmed the penalty decision, sending Audi Field into anticipation.
With the pressure of the match resting on his shoulders, Tai Baribo calmly stepped to the penalty spot and converted the decisive kick, sealing a dramatic 2-1 victory for DC United in the closing moments of stoppage time.
Statistically, the contest remained evenly matched. DC United recorded eight shots on target, while Toronto FC finished with seven. Goalkeepers on both sides were kept busy, each making six saves. DC United committed 14 fouls compared to Toronto’s seven, while both clubs received one yellow card apiece.
Although Toronto controlled more of the ball for much of the evening, DC United’s determination, defensive organization, and ability to capitalize in crucial moments proved to be the difference. Combined with the relentless energy from the supporters inside Audi Field, the Black-and-Red earned a memorable victory that could provide significant momentum heading into the next stretch of the MLS season.
DC United will now remain at Audi Field as they prepare to host Nashville SC on August 1, looking to build upon Saturday night’s dramatic performance in front of their home supporters.
