In a thrilling Group F encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Arlington, Texas, the Netherlands and Japan delivered an entertaining spectacle that ended in a hard-fought 2-2 draw. The Oranje looked poised for a win after twice taking the lead, only for the resilient Samurai Blue to fight back on both occasions, with Daichi Kamada’s deflected 89th-minute strike securing a valuable point for Japan.
The first half remained goalless, with the Netherlands controlling possession but struggling to break down Japan’s disciplined low block. Virgil van Dijk and his teammates dictated the tempo through midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong, yet clear-cut chances were few and far between against a compact Japanese defense.
The game exploded into life shortly after the restart. In the 51st minute, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to power home a header from a corner, giving the Netherlands a deserved 1-0 lead. The Oranje fans in the crowd of nearly 70,000 erupted, sensing a strong start to their World Cup campaign.
Japan responded almost immediately. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura leveled the score with a clinical finish assisted by Takefusa Kubo, showcasing the Samurai Blue’s lethal counter-attacking threat. The momentum swung, and the match became an end-to-end affair.
The Netherlands regained the advantage in the 64th minute through a moment of brilliance from Crysencio Summerville. The winger curled a stunning effort into the bottom corner, restoring the one-goal lead and highlighting the depth of talent in the Dutch squad. Many expected this to be the decisive blow.
But Japan refused to fade. Substitute Koki Ogawa’s late header created chaos in the Dutch box, and Daichi Kamada was on hand to deflect the ball past the goalkeeper in the 88th minute, sending the Japanese supporters into delirium. The equalizer capped a resilient performance from Asia’s standout side.
