In a pulsating night of Leagues Cup action, Real Salt Lake pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexican giants Club América at a packed America First Field. From the outset, Club América, one of the most decorated teams in CONCACAF, looked to impose their will with quick ball movement and high pressing. Their early dominance paid off in the 17th minute when Julián Quiñones finished off a slick team move, curling a shot past RSL keeper Zac MacMath to give Las Águilas the lead.

But Real Salt Lake, known for their grit and resilience, didn’t back down. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni urged his side to stay aggressive, and the home fans roared them on. Their persistence paid off just before halftime when Anderson Julio pounced on a loose ball in the box and slotted it home to level the score at 1-1.

The second half turned into a chess match. América controlled possession, but RSL looked dangerous on the counter. The defining moment came in the 78th minute when Diego Luna, the rising star of Real Salt Lake, weaved through two defenders and unleashed a low shot that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net—sending the stadium into a frenzy.

América pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing minutes, but Real Salt Lake’s defense held firm, led by Justen Glad and Marcelo Silva. A final flurry of corners and free kicks was repelled, and when the final whistle blew, the underdogs from Utah had secured one of the most memorable wins in club history.

With the victory, RSL not only advances in the Leagues Cup but also earns a massive statement win over a Liga MX powerhouse. For América, it’s a disappointing exit and a reminder of the growing strength of MLS sides in interleague competition.

As the confetti settled and fans sang into the night, it was clear: Real Salt Lake had just etched a new chapter in their story—and the Leagues Cup had gained a new contender.
