USC Survives Late Push, Slips Past Rutgers

The USC Trojans men’s basketball team continued their Big Ten Conference schedule with a key home matchup against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on January 31, 2026, at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Entering the game with a solid record and looking to bounce back from a tight road loss to Iowa, the Trojans brought intensity on both ends of the floor. USC’s balanced offensive attack and strong rebounding allowed them to control much of the game and fend off a persistent Rutgers squad throughout the contest. According to official final stats, USC secured the victory with a 78–75 final score over Rutgers, improving their conference record and keeping their postseason hopes alive in a competitive Big Ten slate.  Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. For Rutgers, the road trip represented another opportunity to notch a signature win in what has been a challenging 2025-26 campaign. The Scarlet Knights, known for their tenacious defense and youthful roster, battled USC hard and kept the game within reach until the final minutes. Despite trailing for much of the second half, Rutgers showed resilience and cut into the USC lead late, but ultimately came up just short in the final tally. The close loss dropped the Scarlet Knights further in Big Ten standings while highlighting areas of growth for Steve Pikiell’s squad as they look to gain traction down the stretch of the season.

This matchup added to the recent history between the two programs, which already included a thrilling 97–89 double-overtime victory for USC in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament and a 95–85 Rutgers win earlier that season. In that tournament game, Desmond Claude led USC with a big performance in overtime to lift the Trojans past the Scarlet Knights and into the next round. Back on February 23, 2025, Rutgers had claimed a regular-season win in Piscataway behind a standout effort from Dylan Harper, showing how competitive this series has become in recent seasons.
