Los Angeles was treated to a night of brilliance at BMO Stadium as LAFC cruised past Real Salt Lake 4–1, with Son Heung-min delivering his first ever hat trick in Major League Soccer. The South Korean star showed exactly why LAFC brought him in as a marquee signing, dazzling fans with a performance of skill, composure, and ruthless finishing.
A Dream Start for LAFC
The match opened with high intensity, both sides pressing hard, but it didn’t take long for LAFC to break through. In the 12th minute, Son latched onto a through ball from Ilie Sánchez, cutting inside on his right foot before calmly slotting past the RSL goalkeeper. The stadium erupted as the crowd sensed it could be a special night.
Son Doubles the Lead
Just before halftime, LAFC doubled their advantage and once again it was Son who delivered. A quick counterattack led by Denis Bouanga freed Son down the left wing. With his trademark burst of pace, he drove at the defense and fired a low shot into the far corner to make it 2–0. The BMO Stadium crowd roared, already chanting his name as LAFC went into the break in control.
Real Salt Lake Fight Back
RSL showed some life early in the second half, pulling one back in the 55th minute through a well-taken strike from Andrés Gómez. For a brief moment, it looked like the visitors might mount a comeback. But LAFC quickly re-asserted themselves.
History Made – Son’s Hat Trick
The moment of history came in the 68th minute. Bouanga again played provider, whipping in a cross from the right side. Son timed his run perfectly, rising above the defender to head home his third of the night. Hat trick. MLS history. The fans rose to their feet as Son celebrated with teammates, acknowledging the thunderous ovation.
Sealing the Victory
LAFC weren’t done. In the 82nd minute, Cristian Olivera added a fourth goal with a composed finish after pouncing on a defensive error, ensuring the home side would walk away with a dominant 4–1 win.
A Statement Win
For Son, this was more than just three goals—it was a statement. Critics wondered how quickly he would adapt to the league, but his hat trick proved he’s ready to lead LAFC’s attack. The Black & Gold now look like serious contenders, with Son already developing chemistry with Bouanga and Olivera.
As fans filed out of the stadium, chants of “Son! Son! Son!” echoed through the stands, a sign that LAFC may have found their new hero.
