LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Clippers star James Harden reached a major career milestone on Monday night, moving into ninth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list after surpassing Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal during the Clippers’ 117-109 victory over the Charlotte Hornets at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Harden’s historic moment came early in the third quarter, when he knocked down a 3-pointer that pushed his career scoring total to 28,598 points—just ahead of O’Neal’s 28,596. It came in his 1,187th regular-season game, slightly faster than O’Neal’s pace over his 19-year Hall-of-Fame career.
The 36-year-old guard finished the night with 32 points and 10 assists, a performance that helped the Clippers extend their strong stretch this season. Harden’s scoring was complemented by Kawhi Leonard’s 35 points, while Jordan Miller and Ivica Zubac added key scoring and rebounding to support the win.
Harden’s climb up the scoring list has been steady. He entered the season averaging 25.6 points per game, his best scoring average since the 2019-20 season, when he led the league with 34.3 points per game.
Prior to passing O’Neal, Harden moved into the NBA’s top 10 in December, overtaking Carmelo Anthony. Now ranked ninth, he trails only eight legends—starting with Wilt Chamberlain in eighth with 31,419 points and LeBron James at the top with more than 42,000 career points.
Beyond scoring, Harden’s résumé includes 12th all-time in assists and second all-time in 3-pointers made, further cementing his place among the league’s premier offensive players.
Harden’s milestone adds to a season of personal and team success for the Clippers, as they continue their push toward playoff positioning with a renewed sense of momentum.
