High Hopes for Orange County SC after tough draw against Las Vegas Lights in season opener.

IRVINE, Calif. — Orange County Soccer Club opened its season with a 1–1 draw against Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday night at Championship Stadium, leaving fans optimistic despite the missed opportunity for a home victory.

“I’m hoping (to win) big,” said Abner, a fan of three years who attended the match and enjoyed the electric crowd at the Irvine venue.

Orange County entered the home opener looking to secure its first win of the season against a Las Vegas team that is eager to rebound after finishing last in the standings last season.

The first half was leveled, with Orange County holding 52% possession. The Irvine-based club maintained a strong attacking presence and created consistent pressure in the Lights’ defensive third.

Las Vegas, however, held strong defensively. Defender Nathanial Jones controlled the right side of the field, forcing Orange County to redirect several attacking plays.

Orange County finally broke through when David “Marcelo” Palomino delivered a quick pass to Lyam MacKinnon near the center of the penalty area, slipping past the Lights’ defense. MacKinnon fired a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner to give OCSC a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

Las Vegas responded in the second half, controlling much of the possession and pushing forward in search of an equalizer. The Lights did not register a shot on target until the 85th minute, but the chance proved decisive.

Christian Pinzón delivered a cross into the box that found Nighte Pickering, who headed the ball into the net to tie the match 1–1.

Despite the late equalizer, the match highlighted a silver lining which was the promising chemistry between Palomino and MacKinnon.

“I think that is certainly one combination that can add to the group,” Orange County head coach Danny Stone said. “From that perspective, tonight was pleasing to see — the connection and the goal we scored.”

The developing partnership could become a key attacking option for the Black and Orange as they look to climb higher in the standings this season.

Orange County will travel to face Phoenix Rising on March 14 at 7 p.m. Las Vegas will head to Colorado to play the Colorado Springs Switchbacks later that day at 2 p.m.
