Clippers’ Late Push Falls Short as Denver Secures 102–94 Victory

The lights were bright, the energy was electric, and the future felt real on Sunday night as the Los Angeles Clippers played their second preseason game at the state-of-the-art Intuit Dome. Though the night ended in a 102–94 loss to the defending champion Denver Nuggets, it was anything but a disappointment for Clippers fans. From emotional returns to highlight-reel plays and playoff-like intensity, the night was a celebration of what’s to come.

A Night of Firsts

The Clippers came out with purpose, and Kawhi Leonard made sure the fans had something to cheer about early. The two-time Finals MVP threw down two thunderous dunks in the first half, reminding everyone that he’s still a force on both ends of the floor. His presence set the tone for a game that would go back and forth all night.

And then came the moment that many had been waiting for.

The Return of CP3

When Chris Paul checked into the game midway through the third quarter, the Intuit Dome erupted. The veteran guard, now 40 years old, made his emotional return to the franchise where he became a household name from 2011 to 2017. The ovation was deafening, proof that time hadn’t dulled the fanbase’s appreciation for what CP3 brought to Los Angeles basketball.

Paul wasted no time making an impact, leading the second unit in the fourth quarter with calm leadership, smart passing, and a command of the offense that few in the league can replicate. Though the Clippers couldn’t rally for a win, Paul’s presence on the floor brought a clear sense of direction and purpose, especially for the team’s younger players.

Statistical Snapshot

The game was a seesaw from start to finish, featuring a whopping 21 lead changes. Neither team could pull away for long, with the Clippers’ largest lead reaching 7 points, and the Nuggets peaking with an 8-point advantage late in the fourth quarter.

Turnovers told much of the story. Los Angeles committed 15 turnovers, leading to 20 points for Denver. The Nuggets were slightly sloppier, turning the ball over 16 times, but the Clippers capitalized with 21 points of their own. In a game this close, those extra possessions made a difference.

Building Chemistry

While the box score didn’t favor the Clippers, the game provided glimpses of encouraging chemistry, particularly between Leonard, James Harden, and new acquisition Brook Lopez. Leonard looked healthy and in rhythm, while Harden focused on playmaking and finished with 11 assists. Lopez, known for his spacing and rim protection, hit multiple threes off the bench and gave the team valuable minutes as a stretch five.

Defensively, Ivica Zubac was a bright spot, anchoring the paint and finishing with a double-double. His size and rebounding presence were key in containing Denver’s interior attack.

The Nuggets’ Depth Shines Through

For Denver, this game was another display of why they remain a top-tier title contender. Aaron Gordon led all scorers with 18 points, while Nikola Jokić was efficient and productive in just 22 minutes, tallying 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.

In the second half, Denver’s bench made the difference. Julian Strawther hit back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter that helped the Nuggets pull away, and Jonas Valančiūnas provided interior toughness and timely scoring.

A Promising Start Despite the Score

While preseason wins and losses carry little long-term weight, the night gave Clippers fans every reason to be optimistic. The team showed balance, depth, and flashes of cohesion, while the atmosphere inside the Intuit Dome proved that the franchise’s investment in a home of their own is already paying off.

Most importantly, the return of Chris Paul, now in a mentor role added a layer of emotion and narrative that transcended the final score.

“This is home,” Paul said postgame. “To hear the fans, to be back in this building, it means a lot. I’m just excited to help this team in any way I can.”

What’s Next

The Clippers will continue their preseason slate with a focus on tightening rotations, reducing turnovers, and building on the synergy that was already apparent in Saturday’s debut.

For now, they leave the Intuit Dome not with a win, but with a spark something real to build on.

And for the fans, that spark might be enough to believe that something special is brewing in Inglewood.
