LOS ANGELES — The Canada men’s national soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Guatemala in their 2026 international friendly on Saturday night at BMO Stadium, continuing their preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer.
The lone goal came in the 66th minute, when Canadian forward Jacen Russell-Rowe rose above the defense to head in a perfect cross from Malik Henry, giving Canada the decisive advantage in a match that saw both teams test their tactical depth.
Canada controlled much of the action throughout the contest, finishing with higher possession and more attempts on goal. Despite several scoring opportunities, the visitors’ finishing proved clinical enough to claim the narrow win. Guatemala’s goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro made several strong saves to keep the scoreline close, frustrating Canada’s attacking efforts in key moments.
Because this match did not fall within an official FIFA international window, Canada coach Jesse Marsch fielded a squad made up largely of players based in North America, giving valuable minutes to prospects and players on the fringes of the full senior squad.
For Guatemala, the friendly offered experience against strong CONCACAF competition and a chance to evaluate emerging talent under coach Luis Fernando Tena as part of a broader team rebuild.
The result adds momentum to Canada’s buildup ahead of their co-host role in World Cup 2026, while Guatemala will look to build on the match’s lessons as they focus on future regional competitions and long-term development.
