DC United and Atlanta United Battle to Scoreless Draw at Audi Field
WASHINGTON, D.C. — September 12, 2026 — DC United and Atlanta United battled through 90 minutes of chances, physical play and near misses Saturday night at Audi Field, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the Eastern Conference opponents settled for a 0-0 draw.
Under humid and cloudy conditions for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff, referee Malik Badawi oversaw a match that may have lacked goals but certainly did not lack opportunities. Atlanta controlled much of the ball throughout the night, while DC United relied on defensive organization, physicality and quick attacking opportunities to keep the visitors from turning their possession advantage into a decisive goal.
DC United lined up in a strong 4-4-2 formation, with Tai Baribo and Louis Munteanu leading the attack. Nathan Ordaz earned another starting opportunity, while Nono operated from the right side of the midfield.
Atlanta United controlled an overwhelming 70% of possession, leaving DC United with just 30%. The visitors also generated eight corner kicks compared with DC’s four, repeatedly putting pressure on United’s defense.
Despite Atlanta’s control, DC United refused to break.
Atlanta registered three shots on goal and came agonizingly close to stealing the match on multiple occasions. One of the night’s biggest moments came late in the second half when an Atlanta attacker produced an acrobatic bicycle-kick attempt, or chilena, that crashed off the post. It was one of Atlanta’s final major opportunities to turn its possession and pressure into a winning goal.
DC United’s physical approach was reflected in the foul count. The Black-and-Red committed 16 fouls, while Atlanta finished with six. The interruptions helped make the match increasingly tense as the clock moved toward full time and every remaining opportunity carried greater weight.
While Atlanta controlled the ball, Audi Field belonged to the DC United supporters. The home crowd remained loud throughout the match, providing constant energy as United fought to protect the clean sheet and searched for a late winner.
In the end, Atlanta’s 70% possession, eight corners and repeated attacking pressure were not enough. DC United absorbed the pressure, defended its home ground and walked away from Audi Field with a point following a hard-fought 0-0 draw.
